Minerva Fabrics has just launched a new treat for sewing enthusiasts—the Sabel Boyfriend Cardigan kit, and it’s a perfect excuse to dive into a winter project that blends comfort, style, and creativity.
These limited-edition kits come packed with everything you need to create a stylish cardigan: a soft stretch knit fabric, matching thread, wooden-look buttons, interfacing suitable for knits, and even ballpoint needles for your sewing machine. The fabric is part of Minerva’s Core Range—a soft, heavier-weight knit blend of polyester, viscose, and lycra. It gives off a cozy cable-knit vibe while still being smooth and easy to sew, ideal for structured yet comfortable layering pieces.
Available in five beautifully curated shades, the kit gives you a range of options to suit your style:
- Grape – my chosen color, though I’d describe it more as a deep, muted rose.
- Anthracite – a sleek, dark grey.
- Dark Jeans Blue – a classic denim-inspired hue.
- Teal – rich and full of depth, a perfect mix of blue and green.
- Silver Grey – soft, subtle, and very versatile.
Other Minerva Makers have already sewn up their own versions of this cardigan, so be sure to check out the links on Minerva’s site for even more color inspiration!
The Sabel Boyfriend Cardigan is a relaxed, oversized piece designed for layering through the colder months. With its simple patch pockets, dropped shoulders, and slim sleeves, it’s casual yet chic. The boxy shape and four-piece construction make for a fast sew—but keep in mind that Style Arc patterns don’t include step-by-step illustrations, so a bit of sewing experience is helpful.
I had a bit of extra fabric with my kit, so I paired my cardigan with a matching skirt using the free Elemental Skirt pattern from Sew House Seven. It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite patterns for a quick, comfortable make. I created a knee-length version to make the most of my leftover knit. If you plan carefully when cutting your cardigan pieces (the fabric is 150 cm wide), you’ll only need about half a meter extra for the skirt.
Together, the cardigan and skirt create an outfit that’s all about cozy elegance—secret pajamas you can proudly wear out and about. Just add boots and a statement hat, and you’re set for winter in style! You can see a longer version of my Elemental Skirt [here], which shows just how versatile and adaptable this pattern is.
Sewing this cardigan kit as part of the Minerva Brand Ambassador program has been a real joy. The chunky knit options offer endless possibilities, and you can easily adjust the length to suit your personal style. Whether you want a cropped version or something longer and dramatic, this pattern is a great base for creative layering.
Because really… There is Sew Much To Design.
