Staying Warm & Cozy in a Toaster Sweater: Sew House 7

Updated: Mar 24, 2021

There really isn’t anything better than putting on something soft and cozy and the Toaster Sweater pattern from Sew House 7 is the perfect option.

The pattern is suited to beginning sewers or experienced sewists looking for a quick easy sew on a Sunday afternoon ‘sewjourn’. The pdf pattern goes together easily and the directions and accompanying pictures are really straight forward. I made an XL as I wanted a relaxed fit. The waistband was cut as a size L so it would fit snuggly on my hips. It was an easy pattern to grade to a smaller size through my waist and hips. The pattern helped me to scrap bust the last of my black velvet minky. There was just enough for the front panel, collar and cuffs. It is a wonderfully soft fabric that helps a sweatshirt style pattern feel luxiourious and dressy. The sleeves and back panel are cut from a durable dark grey knit. I had enough of the dark grey knit to make a self-drafted skirt. It’s my favourite pattern- measured for length with a 1" ease at the hip, then graded to my waist measurement. I sewed 2" elastic to the top and voila- a great knit outfit that can be worn together or as versatile separates.

I used my overlocker to sew the Toaster Sweater, but it can just as easily be sewn using a regular sewing machine as long as you use a good jersey knit needle and a zig zag stitch. The Toaster sweater turns out just like the pattern pictures, and there are many more examples to see on Instagram at #toastersweater .

My favourite feature of this pattern is the collar. I can tuck my chin in and get “Toasty”. I will definitely be sewing this pattern again and again. I already have some stunning cream cabled French terry ready for my next make. It will be perfect for keeping warm on cool spring days and summer evenings. I highly recommend this make to all levels of sewists.
